Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Oberlin College Professor Father and Stepmother
Daniel Jones, 32, faces murder charges after his father, Pipo Nguyen-Duy, and stepmother, Thi Tran Phong, were found dead in their Ohio home.

An Oregon man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the deaths of his father, an Oberlin College professor, and his stepmother. Daniel Jones, 32, is accused of fatally shooting Pipo Nguyen-Duy, 64, and Thi Tran Phong, 56, at their home in Oberlin, Ohio. The discovery followed the report of a car fire.
Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the Oberlin College conservatory’s parking lot. Jones reportedly set his car ablaze using a wood stove heater. The suspicious nature of the fire led authorities to locate Jones. Following this, a welfare check was conducted at the home of Nguyen-Duy and Phong, where they were found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. Nguyen-Duy's body was discovered on the first floor, and Phong's in a second-story bedroom.
Jones was taken into custody and is being held at the Lorain County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including six counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, and one count of tampering with evidence.
Witnesses described Jones as appearing disheveled and erratic. One witness reported that Jones emerged from a neighbor's vehicle, claiming he was fleeing a cult. It remains unclear if Jones stole the vehicle he exited before setting his own car on fire.
Inside Jones' burned vehicle, authorities recovered personal items such as his passport and keys, along with live ammunition. A mugshot released following his arrest shows Jones with visible facial injuries and the acronym "EBK," believed to be street slang for "everybody killa," tattooed on his forehead.
During his arraignment, Jones appeared unresponsive. He was observed to turn and give a grin to a cameraman from a local news station. Nguyen-Duy was a professor at Oberlin College and Conservatory. The college has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
