Man Arrested, Charged for Alleged Racist Attack on Muslim Schoolgirl in Sydney

A man has been arrested and charged following an alleged verbal assault on a 13-year-old Muslim schoolgirl on a bus in Sydney, Australia. The incident, which occurred on September 10, involved the man reportedly hurling racial and Islamophobic slurs at the girl, identified as Janna, on an inner-western Sydney bus.

Footage of the incident shows the man directing insults at Janna, including calling her a "f***ing terrorist" and an "immigrant dog." The 13-year-old, a Year 8 student, reportedly defended herself by stating she was born in Australia and reminding the man of her age, but the alleged abuse continued.

Passengers and Janna reported the incident to police after disembarking at Strathfield Railway Station. Authorities arrested a 50-year-old man at a home in Greenacre on Tuesday. He has been charged with stalking and intimidation with the intent to cause fear or physical harm. The man was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.

According to reports, the alleged abuse escalated after Janna intervened on behalf of another girl in a hijab, who the man was reportedly photographing without her consent. Another video segment allegedly captured the man saying, "I can't wait 'til they kill all of you."

State Labor MP for Strathfield Jason Yat-sen Li condemned the alleged attack, stating that Strathfield does not tolerate racist or Islamophobic abuse, especially when directed at children. Islamophobia Envoy Aftab Malik noted that perpetrators appear to be increasingly targeting younger victims, citing data from the Islamophobia Register Australia. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns affirmed that Muslim women and girls have the right to wear hijabs, use public transport, and attend school without facing abuse.
