A Long Island man was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder after his 59-year-old mother was found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home across the street from an elementary school, Suffolk County Police said.

Police identified the suspect as Jason S. Kurumoglu, 30, and the victim as Melida Velasquez, 59. Officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at the single-family house on tree-lined West White Street near Willen Lane just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Suffolk County Police said. Velasquez was discovered with stab wounds inside the residence and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kurumoglu was taken into custody Wednesday and was being held overnight at Suffolk County’s Third Precinct pending an expected arraignment in local court on Thursday, authorities said. He faces a charge of second-degree murder; police did not release further details about a motive or the events leading up to the attack.

The house is located across from Brentwood’s North Elementary School. Police have not reported any injuries to students or staff and did not say whether the school was in session at the time of the incident.

The investigation remains active. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and processing the scene, Suffolk County Police said. The county medical examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death once an autopsy is completed.

Arraignment documents and booking records are expected to be filed at the county courthouse, where prosecutors will present the charge and the accused will be informed of his rights. Second-degree murder in New York carries severe penalties if proven, but officials provided no comment on bail or potential legal defenses.

No further information was immediately available from family members or neighbors. Suffolk County Police asked anyone with information about the case to contact their Homicide Squad. Local officials did not issue any public safety advisories related to the incident.
