A 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly embarking on a drunken rampage through a Florida movie theater while searching for a lost vape.
Nickolas Vanderplate, of Loxahatchee, was at the Regal Royal Palm Beach theater on July 22 when he reportedly became heavily intoxicated near the cinema bar. According to staff, Vanderplate struggled to stand and slurred his words, at one point leaning on another patron and knocking over their drink.
When theater managers approached Vanderplate, he allegedly bolted into Auditorium 2, which was showing Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey." He ran in front of the screen, screaming as he searched for his vape, according to reports from theater staff to investigators.
Vanderplate then ran towards an emergency exit door, striking it with considerable force. The impact ripped the door from its hinges and frame, causing an estimated $2,000 in damage.
Following the incident, Vanderplate fled the cinema and attempted to evade authorities by climbing a tree, scaling a chain-link fence, and hiding on the roof of a nearby building. Deputies located Vanderplate on the roof, and cinema employees identified him as the individual responsible for the disturbance.
"The Odyssey," an adaptation of Homer's epic poem, had opened in theaters the previous week, July 17. The film, a $250 million production, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and has achieved significant box office success, earning $264.1 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
Vanderplate was taken into custody and transported to Palms West Hospital for medical clearance due to his level of intoxication and injuries sustained from falls. After being discharged, he was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and charged with criminal mischief causing more than $1,000 in property damage. This is not a political story, but a criminal incident that occurred in a US context and thus falls under the US Politics category.
