Man Arrested After Assaults on Three Jewish Women in London
Police are investigating the incidents as suspected antisemitic hate crimes and have increased patrols in the area.
A 33-year-old man has been arrested in north-east London following reports of assaults on three Jewish women. One of the women was reportedly pushing a baby in a pram when the incident occurred in the Clapton Common area of Hackney on Monday afternoon.
Members of Shomrim, a Jewish neighbourhood watch group, detained a suspect before police arrived at the scene around 1:40 p.m. BST. Officers then arrested the man on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault. The women involved are believed to have sustained minor injuries.
The Metropolitan Police are treating the incident as a suspected antisemitic hate crime. In response, patrols have been increased in the Hackney area, and authorities are engaging with community leaders to provide reassurance.
Authorities have since made a further arrest of the same 33-year-old man. This additional arrest is in connection with a separate incident in Islington that took place on Friday, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. The suspect remains in custody.
Chief Inspector Erica Crawshaw described the incident as "alarming and distressing" and commended the Shomrim volunteers for their actions in detaining the suspect. "We recognise the concern that this incident will have caused the Jewish community here in Hackney," Crawshaw stated. The police are appealing for anyone with information, or any additional victims who believe they may have been assaulted, to come forward.
