Michael Johnson, 37, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm after an incident on September 7, 2026. CCTV footage captured Johnson shouting at the 80-year-old victim before pushing him with both hands, causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete. The unprovoked attack occurred outside a public library after Johnson reportedly complained about noise levels making it difficult for him to read.

The victim sustained a deep cut to his forehead and reported pain in his hips and arms. He was left lying motionless on the ground until members of the public and his wife rushed to his aid. Johnson fled the scene but was later apprehended by police as he attempted to leave the city.

During interviews, Johnson initially declined to comment before admitting to the assault and attributing it to mental health struggles and frustration over noise. Detective Sergeant Joshua Bliss of Wiltshire Police stated that the victim was unknown to the suspect and had no prior interaction with him. "This is a senseless attack where Michael Johnson attacked a man in his 80s, causing him to suffer a serious facial injury," DS Bliss said. "The victim was unknown to the suspect and they had no interaction before the assault. The victim didn't even look in the suspect's direction before he was approached and attacked."

DS Bliss commended the witnesses who intervened and provided first aid to the victim. "These same members of the public provided vital first aid to the victim until emergency services arrived," he noted. "I also want to thank the local businesses within Salisbury city centre, who supported our investigation by allowing us access to their CCTV systems, which enabled us to track the suspect's movements and obtain a clear image of his face."

Johnson, who is of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the assault at Swindon Magistrates' Court. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 21.
