Man Appears in Court Charged With Murder of Housing Officer
Clifford Foster, 61, is accused of fatally stabbing Eleanor Barnfield, 47, at a retirement village before she crashed her car.
Clifford Foster, 61, appeared in court Thursday charged with the murder of housing officer Eleanor Barnfield, 47. Barnfield was allegedly stabbed at the Ger-Y-Nant sheltered accommodation in Bridgend, South Wales, on Monday before crashing her car as she attempted to drive herself to the hospital.
Foster, who gave his address as the same sheltered accommodation where the attack is alleged to have occurred, appeared at Newport Crown Court using a crutch and with a swollen eye and bruised face. He confirmed his name and date of birth during the brief hearing and was remanded in custody to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday.
According to reports, Foster, an unemployed plasterer, was allegedly inside a flat at the complex when Barnfield told him he should not be there. He is then accused of stabbing her. After the alleged attack, Barnfield managed to drive a short distance before losing control of her vehicle and crashing into a wall.
Police were alerted to the collision at 12:43 p.m. Emergency services arriving at the scene discovered Barnfield had sustained puncture wounds unrelated to the crash. She was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. A mother and grandmother, Barnfield was a valued member of the Valleys to Coast housing association team.
Following the incident, the alleged attacker reportedly barricaded himself in a room at the complex, leading to an armed police response and the evacuation of residents. He was later seen being escorted by officers to a police van.
South Wales Police stated that Foster has been charged with murder. Senior Investigating Officer Claire Lamerton said her thoughts are with Barnfield's loved ones and that the incident is not being investigated as a domestic one, urging the public not to speculate as court proceedings are active.
The Welsh Ambulance Service addressed rumors circulating on social media regarding delayed ambulance response, stating they had no record of calls from Barnfield's phone numbers and that preliminary investigations found no calls received by other means. The service confirmed that emergency services arrived at the scene of the road traffic collision between 12:51 p.m. and 1:13 p.m. and that advanced critical care was provided.
Valleys to Coast issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the "tragic incident" and confirming that a member of their team was involved. The organization described Barnfield as a "much-valued member" whose loss is deeply felt by colleagues and the communities they serve.
Floral tributes were left at the scene of the crash on Coity Road. Residents of the sheltered accommodation have since been able to return, with enhanced security measures in place.
