Joseph Yu, 57, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, charged with the murder of his neighbor, 79-year-old Peter Duss. Mr. Duss was found deceased by police in his home on Monday morning following reports of a dispute. Investigators are reportedly exploring the possibility that the altercation stemmed from allegations of an affair between Mr. Duss and Yu's wife.
Yu appeared in court via video link from a police station, with his right arm heavily bandaged and visible wounds on his left hand. He spoke little during the proceedings, which required a Mandarin interpreter. A prosecutor indicated that the police require at least 14 weeks to prepare a brief of evidence, citing the need to process significant forensic and video evidence, including autopsy reports, blood pattern analysis, mobile phone data, CCTV footage, and approximately 35 hours of body-worn camera footage.
Yu's lawyer did not oppose the delay. Yu, who made no bail application, was remanded in custody until January. While a charge sheet was made available to reporters, a detailed summary of the allegations has not been released, and the exact nature of the case the police intend to build remains unclear.
Yu was arrested on Monday and taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Mr. Duss, a native of Germany, was a long-time resident of the area and had volunteered as a German language tutor at the University of the Third Age Croydon campus. Police stated they are still investigating the timeline of the alleged affair and the details of the incident that led to Mr. Duss's death.
