Man and Woman Charged in Ireland Arson Attack That Killed Family of Four
Two children remain in critical condition following petrol bomb incident.
A man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s have been charged in connection with a petrol bomb attack that killed four members of the same family and left two others in critical condition in Ireland. The pair were arrested on Thursday following several raids on properties linked to gangland criminals in the area.
Kim English, her husband Philip, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died in the early Tuesday morning attack at their home in the Birchwood estate, near Waterford city center. Their two other children, Nadia, 14, and Elliot, six, are in critical condition in hospital.
Gardaí, the Irish national police force, stated that their investigation into the house fire remains ongoing. Phones, laptops, and vehicles seized during Wednesday's raids will be forensically searched for evidence.
Authorities are investigating the possibility that the attack was carried out by a hired individual contracted by a Traveller gang. Senior sources indicated that the male suspect is known to gardaí and has a history of carrying out attacks for gangs, often related to drug debts. It is believed one gang, headed by three brothers, hired the man to carry out the petrol bomb attack. Gardaí have reportedly secured CCTV footage of a vehicle believed to have been used in the incident.
Detectives now believe the family's electric car may have been struck by the petrol bomb, causing it to explode and ignite the devastating fire within the home, rather than the bomb being thrown directly into the house. Previously, the family car had been targeted with a petrol bomb just three weeks before the fatal attack, though no one was injured at that time. The home of Philip's ex-wife, Anne, was also previously targeted in a petrol-bomb attack.
Philip's son from a previous marriage, John James English, stated that gangland figures had been terrorizing his family for years over a £17,000 drug debt owed by an acquaintance. An uncle of Philip, James English, appealed for those responsible to come forward, stating, "At the end of the day, we have a lot of the family now wiped out."
The arrested pair are scheduled to appear before a special sitting of Clonmel District Court.
