Man Accused of Starting Fire During Chemistry Experiment in Long Island Apartment
Police say a Long Island man caused a fire in his apartment building after a chemical experiment reacted violently.
A 34-year-old man, identified as Nolan Gaugler, is facing charges after allegedly starting a fire in his Long Island apartment building due to a volatile chemistry experiment. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday in Mineola, Nassau County.
According to police, Gaugler was mixing hazardous chemicals inside his apartment when the mixture “reacted violently.” In a panic, he reportedly threw the burning substance into the hallway, causing a fire that spread, damaging the floor and walls of the building. Residents were evacuated and remained displaced for several hours.
Authorities responding to the scene found laboratory equipment and a large quantity of chemicals within Gaugler's apartment. Some of the substances were deemed unstable and explosive and were safely removed and detonated elsewhere. Gaugler was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, arson, and criminal possession of a weapon. He pleaded not guilty on Monday and was released on his own recognizance with an ankle monitor.
