Man Accused of Murdering Ann Widdecombe Had 'Particular Hostility to Reform,' Court Told

The man accused of murdering former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe harbored a "particular hostility to Reform," prosecutors stated Friday at the Old Bailey.

Joshua Kerry, 28, is alleged to have maintained an "extreme left wing and/or anti-establishment mindset." The prosecution further contends that Widdecombe's murder had a "terrorist connection" due to being "politically and ideologically motivated."

Last week, Kerry, who was initially charged with Widdecombe's murder in July, faced an additional charge of preparing terrorist acts. This charge includes accusations of conducting "online reconnaissance" of prominent individuals and institutions. Specifically, he is alleged to have traveled to Nigel Farage's South London home on April 19, 2025, and attempted to gain entry approximately 15 months before Widdecombe was killed.

Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb approved the prosecution's request to consolidate the murder and terrorism preparation charges into a single case, asserting they were "inextricably linked."

Kerry appeared in court via video link from Belmarsh prison, wearing a grey prison-issued sweatshirt. A five-week trial has been scheduled for June 8 of next year, with the next hearing set for January 29.

Nicholas Lumley KC, representing the defense, informed the court that Kerry is expected to contest all charges against him.
