Man Accused of Mowing Down Australian MP Helen Haines Lived in Squallor
Neighbors describe years of alleged harassment and a reclusive lifestyle marked by alcohol and rubbish.
The man accused of deliberately striking Australian federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines, with a vehicle lived a reclusive life in a dilapidated property filled with rubbish and liquor bottles, according to neighbors.
Brendan Nugent, 43, of nearby Tarrawingee, has been taken into police custody following the incident outside Haines' Wangaratta electorate office. As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been laid.
Haines, an independent MP, has reportedly lost a leg and remains in critical condition. Images from the scene show police guarding Nugent's overgrown property, with the driveway blocked. His home, described as an overgrown and dilapidated shack, was guarded by police throughout much of Tuesday.
Neighbors have described Nugent as someone they have been terrified of for years, with one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, claiming Nugent had been taken away by police on numerous occasions. This neighbor also stated that Nugent allegedly terrorized residents for years, making threats and even running over a family dog.
Adjacent to a clearly well-maintained property, Nugent's home stood in stark contrast. A messy shed near the main house contained a large collection of whisky bottles alongside fruit juice containers, hinting at his solitary lifestyle. The property was described as a "crumbling snakes' den of liquor bottles and rubbish."
Barber Ricky Jefferies intervened in the incident, pulling the alleged attacker from a LandCruiser and restraining him until police arrived. Haines and her husband, Phil, have been a prominent part of the Indi community. The incident occurred outside Haines' Wangaratta office, a location where the MP frequently engages with her constituents.
