A man accused of fatally shooting his Navy sailor girlfriend and her lover in San Diego is now facing 16 additional charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of two children. Ryan Wesley Proffitt, 33, was charged with the new offenses days after being arrested for the murders of Courtney Chandler, 28, and Nicholas McClure, 27.
The child abuse charges include allegations of sexual intercourse and oral copulation with a child 10 years old or younger, as well as forcible lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14. Prosecutors stated that these alleged crimes, which reportedly occurred between 2020 and 2025, are not connected to the double homicide and are being treated as separate cases. One charge also includes felony child abuse, alleging that Proffitt caused great bodily harm to a child. Proffitt has pleaded not guilty to these child abuse charges.
Proffitt is accused of shooting Chandler and McClure on July 6 at a military housing complex in Ramona. Prosecutors allege that jealousy motivated Proffitt, who had agreed to an open relationship with Chandler. Chandler had reportedly invited McClure, who was homeless, to live in their home. Proffitt told 911 operators that the shootings occurred during a "lovers' quarrel."
Authorities stated that Proffitt planned the killings, loading a firearm and concealing it before confronting Chandler and McClure. According to prosecutors, Chandler had sent a text message to a friend indicating she was aware Proffitt had a gun. During the confrontation, McClure allegedly charged at Proffitt, who then fired at him three times before turning the weapon on Chandler. Police found Proffitt on the steps of the complex with a beer after he called 911.
Proffitt pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Chandler and McClure and is being held without bail. A GoFundMe campaign was created for Chandler, remembering her as a "sister, daughter, granddaughter, and so much more."
