Man Accused of Biting Off Portion of Ear in Jersey Shore Bar Brawl
Charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct filed against two men after an altercation at a Point Pleasant Beach establishment.
A night out at a Jersey Shore bar escalated into violence when a Toms River man allegedly bit off a significant portion of another man's ear, according to authorities.
Michael D. Barone, 35, and John P. Hafner, 34, face charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct following a confrontation at Boatyard401 in Point Pleasant Beach. The incident began when a woman asked Barone and Hafner to stop following her around the bar. The victim intervened, and approximately 30 minutes later, a physical altercation ensued.
Prosecutors allege that Barone slapped and choked the victim before biting off a large piece of his ear. The victim was then knocked to the floor, where Hafner allegedly punched him repeatedly until bystanders intervened. Surveillance footage captured the attack, and bar staff identified the individuals involved.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where responding officers noted severe blood loss and the missing portion of his ear. Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Elizabeth Paterno stated that the victim will require multiple surgeries to repair the injury.
Barone's attorney, Scott Cohen, has disputed the biting allegations, suggesting that his client's height difference from the victim makes the claim unlikely. Despite the accusations, both defendants were released under strict pretrial monitoring, limiting their movements to work and, for Barone, visits with his child. Future court dates have not yet been scheduled.
