Mamdani's Staff Reportedly Clashes With Endorsed Candidate Over NYPD Commissioner Remarks
Sources claim the mayor's team is angered by Darializa Avila Chevalier's public criticism of Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch following an ICE shooting.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's staff is reportedly at odds with Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic House candidate whom the mayor previously endorsed, over her public statements criticizing NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The friction arose after Chevalier, a member of the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), called for Tisch's removal following an incident where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shot an undocumented immigrant.
Mamdani himself stated he had no intention of dismissing Tisch, telling reporters, "Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that." This stance placed him at odds with elements of his own party, including the DSA, which had publicly called for Tisch's dismissal.
Sources close to the situation told the New York Post that Mamdani's staff viewed Chevalier's actions as a "direct undermining" of the mayor. "They were p----- about what she did on social media and her public rhetoric on NYPD," one source told the publication. "City Hall was like, ‘What the f--- are you doing!’" Another source added, "She is throwing her own fireball rhetoric to rally the folks. But instigating doesn’t help."
These sources described Chevalier as a potential liability for the Mamdani administration, expressing surprise at the early onset of these issues. "She’s a loose cannon," a source stated. "They are sick of her, and she’s not even started in Congress."
Chevalier had publicly voiced her anger at Tisch's remarks during a news conference. Tisch had highlighted the criminal history of Oscar Belgal, the 28-year-old man shot by ICE agents. Chevalier, appearing with streamer Hasan Piker, questioned the relevance of Belgal's criminal record, stating, "I have gone back to her remarks to make sure that I was correct in our statement about it. But, to me, it doesn’t even matter, right? It doesn’t even matter."
The NYPD defended Tisch's statements, telling Fox News Digital, "The Police Commissioner was giving a factual update on the incident, and we always provide criminal history in incident updates, if we have it. It’s also one of the first questions that every media outlet asks the NYPD."
The New York State Republican Party's Director of Communications, David Laska, criticized the Democratic Party in relation to the events. "Zohran Mamdani helped create this monster with years of anti-American, antisemitic rhetoric, and now it's eating him alive. History reminds us that even Robespierre was guillotined in the end," Laska told Fox News Digital.
