Mamdani Pitches Trump on NYC Housing Project at Gracie Mansion Summit
Mayor Mamdani discussed the Sunnyside Yards redevelopment with President Trump, acknowledging significant hurdles remain for federal funding and financing.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with President Trump at Gracie Mansion on Monday to discuss the proposed Sunnyside Yards affordable housing project in Queens. The meeting, described as a continuation of a developing relationship between the two political figures, focused on securing federal support for the long-discussed redevelopment.
Mamdani acknowledged that the project, which he revived earlier this year after decades of stagnation, still faces considerable challenges. "We have significant way to go but these meetings do truly assist in that path," Mamdani stated.
President Trump expressed familiarity with the Sunnyside area, noting he previously owned a building there and had been aware of development discussions for the yard for approximately 50 years. "So maybe they have a shot at doing it," Trump commented to reporters following the summit.
The proposed Sunnyside Yards development aims to create 12,000 homes and generate 30,000 jobs. According to Mamdani, progress on the project requires navigating federal bureaucracy and financing hurdles, necessitating White House involvement. He confirmed that a new level of conversation has been established between the New York City Hall housing and operations team and their counterparts at the White House to advance the project.
