New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani saw all three of his endorsed congressional candidates win their primary elections Tuesday, securing their places in the November general election and unseating two incumbent Democratic representatives.
In New York's 7th Congressional District, state Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, backed by Mamdani, is projected to win over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. In the 10th District, former city comptroller Brad Lander, another Mamdani endorsee, is projected to defeat incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman. The mayor's candidate in the 13th District, community advocate Darializa Avila Chevalier, is also projected to win her primary against incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat.
These New York races were among several high-profile contests held Tuesday, which also included primaries in Maryland and Utah, and primary runoffs in South Carolina.
In an upstate New York race to succeed retiring Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik in the 21st District, businessman Anthony Constantino, who had President Donald Trump's support, is projected to win the Republican nomination. Constantino gained attention in 2024 for placing a large "Vote for Trump" sign atop his factory. His Republican primary victory highlights a division within the state party, as the chair of the New York Republican State Committee had backed another candidate. Constantino is set to face dairy farmer Blake Gendebien, who is projected to win the Democratic nomination, in November.
In the 17th District, a race seen as potentially pivotal for control of Congress, former National Security Council Counterterrorism Director Cait Conley is projected to win the Democratic primary. She will challenge Republican Rep. Mike Lawler.
In Maryland, state Delegate Adrian Boafo is projected to win the Democratic nomination in the 5th District, succeeding retiring Rep. Steny Hoyer. Boafo received endorsements from Hoyer, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, and U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks.
Governor Wes Moore is projected to win the Democratic primary for governor in Maryland, setting up a rematch against state Del. Dan Cox, who is projected to win the Republican nomination. Moore is considered a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate.
In South Carolina, Attorney General Alan Wilson is projected to win the Republican gubernatorial primary runoff. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette had initially led the primary but did not secure enough votes to win outright. President Trump endorsed both Evette and Wilson last Friday. Wilson also received endorsements from Republican Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman. Wilson will face state Rep. Jermaine Johnson, who won the Democratic primary.
In Utah's 1st District, former U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams is projected to win the Democratic primary. This district, which has become more Democratic following court-ordered redistricting around Salt Lake City, is one Democrats aim to flip. McAdams is scheduled to compete against Naval Reserve officer and former Trump White House analyst Riley Owen, the Republican nominee.
