Mallorca Sees Surge in Criminal Activity, Tourists Advised to Exercise Caution
The Balearic island experienced a more than 10% increase in offenses during the first half of 2026, with various crime categories showing significant rises.
Mallorca, a popular Spanish holiday destination, has recorded a substantial increase in criminal activity, with offenses rising by over 10 percent in the first six months of 2026 compared to the previous year.
The Ministry of the Interior's Balance of Criminality Report indicates that the Balearic Islands as a whole saw a 7.9 percent rise in criminal offenses, totaling 40,494 during the January-to-June period. Of these, Mallorca accounted for 32,812 offenses, representing the most significant portion of this increase.
Within Mallorca, the capital city of Palma registered the highest number of offenses, with a nearly 10 percent increase to 18,482. While cybercrime saw a slight decrease of 5.8 percent, conventional crimes climbed by 11 percent, exceeding 34,000 incidents.
Specific crime categories also showed notable increases. Sexual offenses across the Balearics rose by 15.2 percent. Robberies involving violence or threats were up 9.8 percent, reaching 716 incidents, and general thefts increased by 8.8 percent to 11,802. Vehicle thefts also contributed to the rise in overall crime figures.
Other islands in the Balearic archipelago experienced varying trends. Formentera saw a 7.5 percent increase in criminal activity, while Ibiza experienced a marginal rise of 0.4 percent. In contrast, Menorca reported a decrease in crime, down by 8 percent.
Recent months have seen several high-profile crime reports from Mallorca. This past summer, a British woman was reportedly abducted and sexually assaulted while walking back to her hotel. In a separate incident in July, a masseur was accused of sexually assaulting a pregnant British tourist during a massage at her hotel in Calas de Mallorca.
Mallorca has faced a significant rise in criminal activity when compared with last year.
