Malik Tillman has transitioned from struggling for playing time to becoming a pivotal player for the U.S. men's national soccer team (USMNT) during the World Cup. His curling free-kick goal to secure the U.S. win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 marked a significant moment in the tournament.
Before this World Cup success, Tillman faced challenges at Bayer Leverkusen in Germany's Bundesliga, where he struggled to earn minutes in his first season. Despite this, he has adapted to a deeper central midfield role assigned by coach Mauricio Pochettino, a shift from his more attacking midfield position.
Tillman's contributions extend beyond his goal. He has played a key role in the team's buildup play and ball movement, recording an assist against Paraguay. He was also instrumental in the build-up to Folarin Balogun's opening goal against Bosnia-Herzegovina. His defensive efforts have also been noted by teammates and coaches.
"I'd argue, other than goals, he’s been our best player everywhere on the field," said captain Tim Ream. "Doing the dirty things, but then also making the hard things look easy. And I think he just wanted to feel like he had a place."
Tillman, described as quiet and reluctant to self-congratulate, has shown significant growth. Ream noted that the Gold Cup last summer was a turning point, with a penalty miss against Costa Rica now seeming like a catalyst for his development. "He’s had that in him all this time, it was just a matter of him finding the confidence and believing in himself," Ream added.
His journey to this point included a successful stint at PSV Eindhoven, where he scored 16 goals in the 2024-25 season. However, the transition to a more competitive league and club presented a new challenge. His brother, Timothy Tillman, who plays for LAFC, advised him to prepare diligently for the World Cup, recognizing its potential as a major opportunity.
"He worked hard, I guess," Timothy Tillman said. "Got ready for the moment and now is just living it."
Tillman's performances have been a bright spot for the USMNT as they prepare for their Round of 16 match against Belgium. His ability to perform under pressure and adapt to different roles has solidified his importance to the team's World Cup campaign.
