Residents of Sea Level Drive in Malibu, California, were forced to evacuate their homes on Tuesday due to a large sinkhole that developed outside actor Nicolas Cage's beachfront mansion. The City of Malibu issued an emergency order declaring "imminent danger" for residents on the street, according to reports.
Seven homes were deemed unsafe for occupancy due to "hazardous conditions." An additional 24 properties were designated as having a lack of "safe vehicular access." In total, 31 properties were marked unsafe because the collapse of a beachfront driveway extended into the roadway, blocking resident and emergency access on Sea Level Drive, which has a single entry and exit point. The American Red Cross established a temporary shelter for affected residents at Malibu High School.
The sinkhole, estimated to be 30 feet by 30 feet, is believed to have been caused by coastal erosion resulting from high waves and tides associated with Hurricane Marie. No injuries have been reported, and the house itself appears to be under renovation. Items such as a Porta Potty and a garbage can were visible inside the chasm.
Nicolas Cage purchased the $10.5 million mansion in 2024. The property, built in the 1990s, features a rooftop deck with ocean views and private beach access.
