The City of Malibu has declared a local emergency following the appearance of a large sinkhole that is threatening beachfront properties and restricting access for residents and emergency services. An urgent evacuation warning has been issued for more than 30 properties situated along the coastline.
The decision to declare the emergency and issue evacuation orders was made in consultation with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department, according to a city statement. The sinkhole's presence "restricts vital access for residents and emergency services," the statement noted.
Mandatory evacuation orders were specifically issued for 31 properties along Sea Level Drive. A temporary shelter has been established at Malibu High School to accommodate those affected by the evacuation orders. These orders come as the sinkhole expanded near a beachfront property owned by actor Nicolas Cage.
Malibu officials have warned that conditions in the area are likely to worsen due to anticipated high tides and rainfall. The city is bracing for the potential impact of Hurricane Marie, which is expected to bring increased rain to the region.
Coastal erosion and storm surges have previously impacted beachfront properties in Malibu. A seawall failure and significant storm surge during Hurricane Marie in the past resulted in the collapse of a driveway and washed out the foundation of a beachfront property.
