Malibu Colony Homes Damaged by High Tides, Market Cools

High tides and storm surges from Tropical Storm Rachel have caused significant damage to oceanfront properties in Malibu Colony, a guard-gated community known for its celebrity residents. The powerful waves tore away decks and beach stairs, and some homes were inundated with seawater and sand. The damage has prompted residents to cancel community meetings to focus on repairs.

The situation in Malibu Colony, while less severe than in neighboring Newport Beach and Long Beach, has coincided with renewed concerns about wildfires. A recent brush fire, fanned by Santa Ana winds, scorched 200 acres and led to evacuation orders in parts of the Malibu hills. This combination of coastal erosion and wildfire threats has created uncertainty in the local real estate market.

Sales in the exclusive enclave have reportedly stalled as potential buyers and current residents adopt a wait-and-see approach. The threat of future high tides, with several more king tides expected before the end of the year, including a potential surge around the Christmas full moon, is a significant concern.

One of the notable properties on the market is a five-bedroom home owned by filmmaker Spike Jonze, listed for $22 million. Jonze purchased the property in 2023 for $18 million. Another listing, belonging to Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, has seen a price reduction, now listed at $7.995 million, down from $8.495 million. The overall market sentiment among potential buyers appears to be one of caution, with some explicitly stating they are holding off on purchases due to the environmental risks.

Malibu has a history of natural disasters, having been significantly impacted by wildfires in recent years, including the 2025 Palisades Fire. The recent Bryson Fire near Encinal Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway has underscored the ongoing risk of wildfires in the region.

The Colony, an area with a storied past as a hub for Hollywood elite, includes current and former residents such as Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Ridley Scott, and Flea. The recent events highlight the vulnerability of even the most exclusive coastal properties to the impacts of climate change and extreme weather.
