Malacia Details Unexplained Exile from Manchester United Squad

Tyrell Malacia has detailed his experience of being ostracized from Manchester United's squad without any clear explanation from manager Ruben Amorim.

Malacia, 27, joined Manchester United in 2022 and had a promising debut season under Erik ten Hag. However, a significant knee injury sidelined him for 18 months. Upon his return to fitness, ten Hag had been replaced by Amorim. Malacia was initially loaned to PSV Eindhoven for six months.

He returned for the 2025 preseason, hoping for a fresh start. Before the season began, the club announced that Malacia, along with several other players, would train separately and did not have a future under Amorim.

Malacia, who now plays for FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer, stated that he never received a reason for his exile from the squad. "I don't know where that came from, I don't know if it was Ruben or higher up or anything, but I never said anything about it," Malacia told BBC Sport. "I just kept working and doing my thing even though it was difficult sometimes training in a group of five."

He recalled how the situation evolved, with other players like Marcus Rashford, Garnacho, and Antony eventually leaving the isolated training group. "Then I stayed on my own, training with the second team, even with the under-18s and below. It's tough. It's tough mentally."

Despite the challenging circumstances, Malacia continued to train, believing that not showing up would have been counterproductive. "I could have said 'OK, I'm not coming into training'. But I thought 'that's not going to help me'. It's a reason for them to say 'this is the reason you are with them or training on your own'. I just kept my head down and did the work."

Malacia remained fit after his injury, but he felt this was not widely recognized. "I always stayed fit since I came back from my injury, but people didn't know that. They were like 'why is he not playing?'."

Later in the season, Amorim included Malacia in matchday squads starting in late November. However, Malacia was determined to leave in the January transfer window. He had discussions with interim boss Michael Carrick about his future.

"I had a good conversation with Michael [Carrick] when he came," Malacia said. "Obviously, I wanted to leave, then some injuries came so I couldn't leave because of the numbers in the squad. That was difficult to accept. I was like 'I'm not going to play but I'm not allowed to leave so what's the point of me staying here'. Then he explained to me."

He added, "At the end of the day everybody is there for themselves. I'm there for myself obviously in the first place and then obviously the team but also the manager is there for himself, he needs to save his job or do his job well."

Malacia made a brief appearance off the bench against Newcastle on March 5 and played his final game for the club against Brighton on May 24, allowing him to bid farewell to the fans.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Malacia stated, "Still, I don't regret anything. I had a great time in my first season and the people who worked there and the players I met there were amazing, so, nah, I really enjoyed my time."
