Major television networks have announced a collective boycott of President Donald Trump's on-camera coverage during his visit to the United Nations General Assembly, in protest of the White House's recent ban on CNN and other news organizations.
Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC, operating as the TV pool, will not dispatch cameramen or reporters to cover Trump's events on Monday. This decision means his trip to New York for the UN General Assembly meeting will not be aired by these major networks.
Real America's Voice (RAV), a conservative outlet, is expected to stream the UN event. Local TV operator Hearst will cover the president's White House events.
Bryan Boughton, Fox News Washington Bureau Chief, confirmed the boycott in an email stating, "This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President." He added, "This follows the White House's position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place."
CNN had been scheduled to serve as the TV pool crew on Monday. The White House had banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico on Friday, with Trump citing them as "fake news" and criticizing their coverage.
When reporters from the banned outlets attempted to work over the weekend, some had their press credentials revoked. The President has also indicated potential actions against The New York Times and The Washington Post.
The major broadcasters issued a joint statement condemning the White House's decision. "The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government," the statement read. "No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting."
In response to the boycott, the White House released a statement from the President on social media. "The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish," Trump wrote. "It is instituting an assault on the fake news, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America."
He further characterized the "fake news" as "corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control. It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, now!"
It remains unclear when the major broadcasters will resume coverage of the president.
