Fire crews responded to a major fire at the derelict Dalton Mills in Keighley on Tuesday. The mill, famously used as a filming location for the BBC television series 'Peaky Blinders', has a history of fires and security issues.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) urged the public to avoid the area while emergency crews worked at the scene. Residents nearby were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke and embers. Police were also present at the location.
This is not the first incident at the historic site. Dalton Mills was also significantly damaged by a large fire in 2022. The building has been described as derelict and has suffered from repeated trespass incidents.
In 2024, The Crown Estate assumed legal responsibility for the building under ancient property laws after the last owner declared bankruptcy and a planned restoration project collapsed. Bradford Council has stated that The Crown Estate is aware of the security concerns surrounding the abandoned site.
The council indicated that it was collaborating with Historic England on implementing additional security measures to address ongoing issues at the mill.
