Maine School Official Cites Islamic Beliefs in Classroom Dog Debate

A debate over the presence of dogs in classrooms is underway in Portland, Maine Public Schools, following concerns raised by an administrator regarding Islamic religious beliefs about the animals. The district is considering policy changes after a teacher proposed fostering puppies in her classroom.

Dr. Abdullahi Ahmed, the assistant superintendent for student, family, and community partnerships for Portland Public Schools, voiced these concerns at an Oct. 14 policy committee meeting. He explained that certain Islamic traditions consider dog saliva to be impure, a point he noted after consulting with local Muslim religious leaders who opposed dogs as classroom pets. Ahmed suggested potential accommodations, such as keeping dogs in separate areas, to respect students and families with religious objections.

The discussion originated from a teacher at Ocean Avenue Elementary School who sought permission to foster puppies in her classroom, allowing students interaction with the animals during learning and play. Ahmed emphasized that the objection is not to animals in general, stating, "in Islamic tradition, there is always the love for animals and living things and compassion for animals." However, he reiterated that "some Islamic traditions consider dogs unclean," specifically citing dog saliva as an issue of ritual purity for some adherents.

During the policy committee meeting, members discussed whether any revised policy should exclusively address dogs or encompass other classroom animals, as well as the implementation of opt-in and opt-out provisions for students. No definitive policy changes were voted on during the October meeting.

Tina Descovich, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, commented on the situation, stating that dogs have historically enriched the lives of school children and called objections to classroom dogs "silly."

Fox News Digital reached out to Dr. Ahmed and Ryan Scallon, the superintendent of Portland Public Schools, for further comment but did not receive an immediate response.
