Maine Democrats Tap Successor to Ousted Senate Candidate

Maine Democrats have selected Troy Jackson, former president of the Maine State Senate, to replace Graham Platner as their candidate for U.S. Senate. The decision follows the withdrawal of Platner, who faced significant backlash and accusations of antisemitism.

Jackson, who was defeated in the state's gubernatorial primary earlier in the summer, was chosen by progressives seeking a candidate whose rhetoric aligns with their base, particularly on issues concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Following Platner's departure, Jackson has echoed sentiments critical of Israel's actions in Gaza, stating, "Anybody with eyes and a heart knows the Israeli government is committing genocide in Gaza." He further elaborated in a statement to Portland's NBC News affiliate, "It’s unfortunate that there are people here in Maine that don’t like to use that term only because they’re Jewish and what that means to them, with the Holocaust." Jackson insisted that the conflict "fits that description and it is. It’s [an] unbelievable thing that’s happened there that people that are innocent are being murdered, and it is a genocide."

While acknowledging Hamas's role in initiating the conflict, Jackson's condemnation of the group was more reluctant. The article suggests that Jackson's focus on criticizing Israel, and what is framed as a reluctance to fully condemn Hamas, reflects a broader trend within segments of the Democratic Party base. This critique extends to other political figures and progressive influencers who have voiced similar criticisms regarding the conflict and strategies to combat antisemitism.

Jackson's selection comes after Platner's campaign imploded amid controversy, including allegations of antisemitic remarks and a controversial tattoo. The article posits that Jackson's more recent statements and past alleged behavior, including accusations of mistreating an ex-girlfriend and a female colleague, align with the progressive base's current demands. The author characterizes these developments as indicative of a shift within the Democratic Party, where intolerance towards certain political stances, particularly concerning Israel, has become a defining characteristic for some factions.
