A Maine couple on their way to a fishing trip encountered a dramatic wildlife scene when they intervened to save a moose calf from a black bear in Telos Township. Elvia and Todd Malcolm, residents of Lincoln, Maine, were driving when they observed a female moose near a wooded area.

Todd Malcolm told The Associated Press that they stopped their truck to watch the moose, which appeared agitated and was vocalizing, seemingly calling for its calf. Suddenly, the calf and a black bear emerged from the trees and ran directly toward the couple's vehicle.

Recognizing the danger to the calf, Todd Malcolm decided to act. He put his truck in drive and accelerated, positioning the vehicle between the bear and the calf. Malcolm stated his intention was not to harm the bear but to interrupt the chase. The bear veered off and disappeared into the woods.

Elvia Malcolm described her heart racing during the encounter, relieved that the bear abandoned its pursuit. She looked ahead and saw the mother moose and calf reunited and safe. She managed to capture action shots of the chase through the truck's front windshield. The Malcolms then continued to their intended fishing spot.
