Magnet Fisherman Recovers Lost Urn from River, Reunites Family with Loved One's Ashes

A magnet fisherman in Rome, Georgia, discovered a lost cremation box in the Oostanaula River, leading to the reunification of a family with the ashes of their loved one.

Lucas McGuire, 24, was searching the river for his lost line and magnet, which he had accidentally dropped while seeking metallic treasures. While retrieving his equipment, he found the box. "I got this feeling, this is someone’s loved one. Why was it in the water? I felt like I had to find them," McGuire stated.

McGuire's family is involved in the funeral business, which aided him in using an ID tag from the box to locate the deceased woman's relatives. He discovered that the woman was the matriarch of a Hindu family. Her husband had accidentally dropped the box containing her remains into the river while attempting to scatter the ashes as part of a tradition. McGuire noted that he found the box exactly one year after the woman had died.

The discovery occurred in 2022, and the box was returned to the family months later. McGuire recently shared the story on his Facebook page, OutdoorsWithLucas.

Although the family declined to speak with the press, the deceased woman's daughter expressed gratitude to McGuire. "I am still so incredibly grateful for your honesty and kindness," she texted him. McGuire, who now works in the funeral business with his father, stated he was happy to have been in the right place at the right time to provide closure for the family.
