Magic Johnson Expresses Disbelief Over Commanders' Clock Management in Giants Tie

NBA legend and minority owner of the Washington Commanders, Magic Johnson, voiced his astonishment at the team's handling of the clock during overtime in their recent game against the New York Giants, which ended in a 27-27 tie.

Following a run by quarterback Jayden Daniels with seconds remaining in the overtime period, the Commanders appeared to lack urgency in setting up for the next play. Precious seconds elapsed before the ball was snapped, ultimately preventing the team from attempting a game-winning field goal. The clock expired, sealing the tie.

Johnson, who holds a stake in the Commanders, shared his reaction on social media. "I’m in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today’s overtime game against the Giants," he posted on X. "All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!" He punctuated his statement with a facepalm emoji.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn took responsibility for the clock mismanagement, stating that the decision-making in that crucial situation fell on him. Quinn deflected blame from Daniels, who he felt had played a strong game.

"The sequence of that does not fall on him," Quinn told reporters. "It’s an out-of-bounds throw or a ‘clock.’ That has to come from me. I don’t even have to put him in that spot. I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier, we don’t need to gain more yards. That’s on me."

Daniels acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, "We all gotta be better situationally. Starts with me. Everybody will say the same thing, but we just gotta be better at situational football."
