The conservative MAGA movement is expressing anxiety over the possibility that Democrats may prevent President Trump from appointing a new Supreme Court justice should a vacancy arise. This concern follows Tuesday night's election results, which saw Democrats regain control of both the House and the Senate.
The shift in power, which included Senate flips in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, and Iowa, means the new Democratic majority will hold sway over any potential Supreme Court nominations during the remainder of Trump's second term.
Rumors have circulated regarding the potential retirement of conservative justices Clarence Thomas, 78, and Samuel Alito, 76, before the end of Trump's presidency. However, with Democratic control of Congress, the confirmation process for any nominee could be blocked.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, an ally of Trump, shared his concerns on social media. "Chance of confirming a worthy successor to Justice Thomas and/or Alito during President Trump’s term: Zero," he posted, further noting that "Chance of confirming a worthy successor during a hypothetical GOP admin 2029-2033: probably zero (GOP won’t be able to recapture enough seats in 28)."
Other prominent MAGA figures echoed these sentiments. Michael Flynn Jr., son of former national security advisor Michael Flynn, responded to DeSantis by asking, "Liberal Supreme Court?" MAGA influencer Joey Mannarino expressed similar dismay, stating, "We needed to replace Alito and Thomas while we had the chance. Now we’re f***ed."
