The pop icon's acceptance speeches included confusion over awards and calling out Sabrina Carpenter.
Madonna delivered a series of memorable and chaotic moments during the MTV VMAs 2026, which quickly went viral on social media. The singer, who performed for the first time at the awards show in over two decades, appeared uncertain about the categories for some of the awards she was involved in accepting.
While accepting the award for best dance alongside Troye Sivan and Charli XCX, Madonna confessed she was "unclear" about the specifics of the award. Charli XCX clarified that the honor was for the "Confessions II" film. During her acceptance, Madonna also prompted Sivan and Charli XCX to move closer, stating there was "safety in numbers" and that she felt "good surrounded by people who like to dance." She thanked filmmakers David Toro and Solomon Chase for their work.
Earlier in her acceptance speech, Madonna shed her jacket and joked about removing something from her posterior, which she later explained was a reference to a "laser up my ass" that had been there all night. She questioned the audience if they understood the joke, concluding by emphasizing the unifying power of dance, stating, "Dance brings everybody together. We are all equal on the dance floor."
The artist also made headlines for her interaction with Sabrina Carpenter during the acceptance of an award for best collaboration. Madonna recounted her process of reaching out to Carpenter for their song "Bring Your Love," mentioning that she DM'ed Carpenter after five days of not hearing back. This prompted Carpenter to playfully retort that her team "is s–tting themselves backstage" and that they do respond. Online reactions noted Carpenter's apparent surprise at Madonna's remark, with some suggesting Carpenter cut Madonna's speech short.
Carpenter concluded the interaction by announcing, "Madonna!"
Maddona and Carpenter opened the awards show with a performance of their song, and Charli XCX joined Madonna for a rendition of "Danceteria." The event was hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
