Madonna Electrifies VMAs 2026 Stage After 23-Year Hiatus

Madonna opened the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with a highly anticipated performance, marking her first live appearance at the ceremony in 23 years. The iconic singer, 68, took the stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Snoop Dogg, delivering an electrifying set that featured guest appearances by fellow pop artists Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX.

Madonna, dressed in a black coat over a red dress, performed her 2026 hit "Bring Your Love" alongside Carpenter, who sported a white button-down shirt and black micro-shorts. Charli XCX joined Madonna for a rendition of the latter's song "Danceteria," with the performance set designed to resemble a public men's restroom.

Actress Julia Garner, who was previously slated to portray Madonna in a now-canceled biopic, was also seen dancing alongside the singer during the performance. "Entourage" actress Debi Mazar, a longtime friend of Madonna's, made an appearance, as did other notable figures including Seth Rogen and Nigel Barker.

The performance evoked memories of Madonna's last VMA appearance in 2003, when she famously kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. That moment, a mashup of "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood," remains one of the most talked-about in the show's history. In that 2003 performance, Aguilera and Spears were dressed as brides, while Madonna emerged from a cake. Missy Elliott later joined them for "Work It" and "Get Ur Freak On."

Jennifer Lopez was initially intended to participate in the 2003 performance but had a prior commitment. Aguilera later commented on the kiss, describing Madonna's lips as "soft" and calling her a "cute little kisser." In a 2018 appearance, Aguilera reflected that the broadcast cut away from the kiss to show Justin Timberlake's reaction, calling it a "cheap shot."

Madonna's VMA history also includes memorable performances of "Like a Virgin" in 1984 and "Vogue" in 1990.

The performance comes as Madonna promotes her 15th studio album, "Confessions II," released in July, which topped the Billboard charts. A source close to the artist indicated that the making of the album was an intensely reflective process, influenced by the recent passing of her brother and stepmother, as well as her "Celebration" tour and a 2023 health scare, leading her to channel "mourning into music."
