Maddox Jolie-Pitt, 25, has legally dropped his father Brad Pitt's surname, with a Los Angeles judge approving the change on Monday. The court order officially makes his name Maddox Chivan Jolie. This move follows that of his younger sister, Shiloh, 20, who also recently filed to have Pitt removed from her name.
Maddox appeared remotely at the court hearing, accompanied by his attorney, Peter Levine. The decision to change his name comes amid reported estrangement from his actor father.
Earlier this year, both Maddox and his sister Zahara, 21, published legal notices in the Los Angeles Daily Journal indicating their intention to drop Pitt's last name. Zahara has a name change hearing scheduled for September 28. Fraternal twins Vivienne and Knox, both 18, have also informally ceased using their father's surname and are reportedly planning to formalize the change.
Shiloh's attorney, Levine, previously stated that her decision to drop the name was an "independent and significant decision following painful events." He added that she was "merely following legal process" by publishing the information.
Sources have indicated that Pitt's relationship with his older children remains strained, with "virtually no contact" with the adult children. His engagement with the younger children has also been more limited recently due to his filming schedule.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's relationship began after they co-starred in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." They were married from 2014 to 2024, following a 12-year relationship. The couple's split in 2016 has led to an ongoing legal battle, primarily concerning their shared French winery, Château Miraval. Pitt alleges that Jolie sold her stake in the winery to Russian businessman Yuri Shefler without his knowledge, violating an agreement.
Pitt has been in a relationship with jewelry designer Ines de Ramon since 2022.
