Maddison Ends Goal Drought as Tottenham Secures First Premier League Win
James Maddison scores his first Premier League goal in 610 days, leading Tottenham to a crucial 3-1 victory over Coventry and moving them off the bottom of the table, while Dejan Kulusevski makes a long-awaited return from injury.
James Maddison's return to scoring form and Dejan Kulusevski's first appearance in nearly 18 months provided a significant boost for Tottenham, as they secured their first Premier League win of the season, defeating Coventry 3-1. Maddison's goal in the 14th minute, his first in 610 days, broke the deadlock and settled early nerves. The midfielder, who had been sidelined by knee, hip, and shoulder injuries, repaid manager Roberto De Zerbi's faith with a curling shot into the top corner from just outside the penalty area.
Maddison was substituted in the 69th minute with Tottenham leading 2-1. Jack Rudoni had equalized for Coventry before Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham's advantage with his first goal since joining from Manchester City. Ben Davies added a third goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time, a strike the Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth will wish he had saved, sealing the victory and lifting Tottenham off the foot of the Premier League table.
The win came after a training break on the Costa del Sol. Manager Roberto De Zerbi, who had described the team's previous performance against Manchester United as the first time they played like a unit, made five changes and adopted a new formation, partly due to injuries. Key players like Savio, Lucas Bergvall, and Destiny Udogie were unavailable, with Udogie sustaining a knee injury. Captain Micky van de Ven and Andy Robertson were also rested following the international break, contributing to an unfamiliar three-center-half setup.
Coventry started the match with pressure, forcing saves and headers in the opening 15 minutes. Tottenham, however, showed flickers of promise. Mohamed Kudus, deployed in a wing-back role with limited defensive duties, was instrumental. Van Hecke, a right-sided central defender, and midfielder Archie Gray adjusted their positions to cover, with Van Hecke at times playing as a right-back, which allowed Kudus freedom to move and was involved in the build-up to Maddison's opening goal.
Despite taking the lead, Tottenham remained vulnerable to Coventry's quick turnovers and set-piece threats. Van de Ven's defensive recovery was crucial in the first half to prevent Brandon Thomas-Asante from getting through. Coventry, who had found form after a difficult start to the season, leveled the score early in the second half when Van Hecke lost possession and Rudoni capitalized.
Tottenham's response to conceding was encouraging for De Zerbi, as the team pushed forward with renewed purpose. Sandro Tonali had opportunities before Marmoush scored, a goal that stood despite claims of a foul on Milan van Ewijk. The closing stages of the match saw further injury concerns for Tottenham, with Tosin, Robertson, and Marmoush all requiring attention. It was during this period that Dejan Kulusevski entered the field to a standing ovation, marking his return from a significant knee injury that had sidelined him for approximately 18 months.
Kulusevski's return, coupled with Maddison's impactful goal, signals a turning point for Tottenham as they aim to build momentum after their first league victory of the season.
