Maddinson's Record Duck Highlights Australia's Aging Test Squad

DURBAN – Nic Maddinson's return to the Australian Test cricket side was marked by a record-breaking duck, facing 33 deliveries without scoring. This lengthy scoreless period is the longest by an Australian opener in Test history and the third-longest by any Test opener. Maddinson, 34, edged a Marco Jansen delivery onto his stumps to conclude his brief and difficult innings.

Maddinson's recall to the Test squad after a nearly 10-year absence was significant, particularly as he returned to cricket only a year prior following a diagnosis of testicular cancer in April 2025. The cancer had spread to his lung and lymph nodes, leading him to miss most of the previous year for treatment.

The opener's struggles on his return also highlight a broader trend within the Australian team. Maddinson was selected over the younger Cooper Connolly, while another new addition to the batting lineup, Matt Renshaw, made his debut a decade ago. Australia fielded an entire XI aged over 30 for the first time in its history.

By the midpoint of the first day of the first Test against South Africa, Australia was struggling at 127-6. Renshaw was the only frontline batter remaining, with veteran players including Steve Smith, Alex Carey, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, and Beau Webster all dismissed. Labuschagne, who batted well for 37, has now gone 44 Test innings without a century.

The Australian bowling attack, featuring Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon, also consists of players in their mid-30s and late-30s, indicating a team with considerable experience but also one facing the challenges of an aging roster. This Test is part of an exceptionally busy schedule for Australia leading up to next summer's Ashes, which includes tours to India and matches against England.
