Macron Warns of Intensified Russian Hybrid Attacks on Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned that the threat of hybrid attacks orchestrated by Russia against Europe and France has escalated. Speaking at the Elysee Palace, Macron announced he has directed the French government to develop a plan for safeguarding critical infrastructure and defense industry sites.

Macron stated that France has been the target of Russian hybrid attacks in recent weeks, actions that will not go unanswered. This warning comes as a growing number of European leaders express concerns about potential Russian actions aimed at undermining support for Ukraine. The French president made these remarks following a meeting with party leaders to discuss the security implications of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

He referenced a drone incident at Leipzig airport in Germany last month, which has been attributed to Russia, as well as statements from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk suggesting Russia's plans for drone and missile strikes targeting Poland and other NATO eastern flank nations.

"In recent weeks, the Russian hybrid threat against Europeans and against France has intensified," Macron said. "The intent is to intimidate us and break our effort to support Ukraine. The result will be the exact opposite. We are not intimidated because we know that our security today and tomorrow is at stake in Ukraine."

The French president outlined that the government's task includes protecting critical infrastructure and the most sensitive defense industry and technology sites from drone and cyberattacks.

Furthermore, Macron announced France's intention to convene a G7 meeting focused on energy issues. The gathering aims to strengthen cooperation and mitigate potential tensions between G7 countries and their main energy partners. The meeting will also explore options for releasing or unlocking strategic reserves, he added.
