Macron Vows Ban on Unsanctioned Protests Amid French Unrest

French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday that his administration will implement a ban on protests organized by individuals or groups lacking legitimate authority, as the country grapples with widespread riots and looting. Macron asserted that "ultra-left groups" were responsible for what he described as "political and seditious acts" aimed at undermining the republic.

Macron's remarks came as thousands demonstrated in Paris, with larger protests anticipated over the weekend. Businesses in central Paris have begun boarding up windows in anticipation of potential violence. Authorities in Lyon have already banned planned protests for Saturday. The French president indicated that while trade unions can request demonstrations, prefects will review these requests according to the law, potentially proposing alternative routes to safeguard city centers, businesses, and public buildings.

"The rules are simple, and I think they're just common sense. The general recommendation is that there should be no demonstrations in the coming days," Macron stated. "For those who still want to protest, if they are trade unions, prefects will propose alternative routes."

Organizers of a Thursday protest in Paris reported that an administrative court overturned a police ban, which had been issued due to concerns over violence following clashes between masked youths and police, as well as looting and car fires the previous weekend. The protests, which initially focused on education reform in September, have since evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations, with French officials attributing their escalation to far-left factions.

Protesters gathered peacefully in southeastern Paris on Thursday under heavy police observation. The upcoming Saturday demonstration is expected to draw participants from the "yellow vest" movement, which previously organized large-scale protests against fuel prices in 2018 and 2019, and the CGT labor union.
