Macklin Celebrini, the San Jose Sharks' top pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, has signed a five-year contract extension with an average annual value (AAV) of $18.8 million. This deal, which begins in the 2027-28 season, makes him the highest-paid player in the National Hockey League, surpassing Anaheim Ducks forward Leo Carlsson's recent contract.
Celebrini's extension comes after a standout sophomore season where he recorded 115 points, including 45 goals and 70 assists. He also earned a spot in the Olympics.
The Sharks' general manager, Mike Grier, has secured a key piece of the team's future. Celebrini is considered the centerpiece of a young Sharks squad that also includes promising players like Will Smith and Michael Misa. Had the Sharks not signed Celebrini to an extension, he would have been eligible for restricted free agency next season.
By signing this deal, the Sharks preempted the possibility of an offer sheet from another team. Carlsson's previous record-setting deal, worth $18 million AAV, was the result of the Ducks matching an offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers. As NHL salaries and the salary cap continue to rise, the Sharks' $18.8 million AAV for Celebrini could prove to be a team-friendly contract in the coming years.
