Macklemore's Past Costume Controversy Resurfaces Amidst Tour Dispute

Rapper Macklemore has become embroiled in renewed controversy as photos of him wearing a costume criticized as an "antisemitic Jewish caricature" have resurfaced online. This development coincides with ongoing backlash against singer Ed Sheeran for removing Macklemore from his tour dates, with climate activist Greta Thunberg also weighing in on the situation.

Macklemore, whose legal name is Benjamin Haggerty, was removed from Sheeran's tour following a politically charged speech in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank during performances in New Jersey in early September. Macklemore stated that Sheeran informed him that stadium owner Robert Kraft had issued an ultimatum, threatening to cancel the entire tour if Macklemore was not removed.

Sheeran released a statement asserting that he never publicly takes political stances and that his shows are intended for unity and joy. He added that while he respects Macklemore's conviction, there are different approaches to advocating for peace.

Amidst this, images from a 2014 performance in Seattle have re-emerged, showing Macklemore in a costume featuring a large prosthetic nose, a beard, and a wig. Israeli activist Hen Mazzig criticized Macklemore's apology, calling it "gaslighting the Jewish community about our pain." Jewish activist Rachel Moiselle drew a parallel to Blackface, questioning why standards might differ for perceived antisemitism. Talk show host Howard Feldman suggested the costume would always overshadow Macklemore's activism.

Greta Thunberg, a vocal pro-Palestine activist, expressed support for the "cancellation" of Sheeran, stating on Instagram that the situation was a sign of shifting global consciousness and that "the normalisation of an apartheid state... will no longer be tolerated." Thunberg declared, "Ed, there is only one victim here: the Palestinian people."

Following Macklemore's departure, several other artists on Sheeran's tour withdrew, including Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, and the Irish band Beoga. These artists cited their support for Palestine and their unwillingness to perform in venues that they felt silenced advocacy for the Palestinian people.

In response to the controversy, Irish radio station Classic Hits Radio announced it would stop playing Sheeran's music "for the foreseeable future," citing feedback from their audience and a desire to stand with Irish artists who had made professional decisions based on their convictions.

Sheeran reportedly lost over 200,000 Instagram followers in 24 hours due to the backlash. He reiterated that he uses his platform for unity and that while he holds personal views on the conflict, he chooses not to use his professional platform for politics due to his young audience.

The broader context of the situation includes recent actions by the UK government, which imposed sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, a move supported by France, Canada, and nine other European nations. The UK cited "ethnic cleansing of Palestinians" by settlers. Israel's Foreign Minister criticized the UK's stance, announcing counter-measures. In contrast, the Trump administration is reportedly proceeding with a significant arms sale to Israel.

Public support for Israel in the United States has reportedly declined, particularly among Democrats, with a June Quinnipiac University poll indicating a majority of voters believe the U.S. is too supportive of Israel. Gaza's health ministry reported 1,369 Palestinians killed by Israeli airstrikes since the ceasefire in October, though the ministry does not differentiate between civilians and militants.
