Macklemore Pledges $1 Million to Palestinian Aid, Challenges Patriots Owner Kraft to Match

Rapper Macklemore has pledged $1 million in net earnings from his stint as an opening act on Ed Sheeran's tour to Palestinian aid organizations. The announcement came after Macklemore was removed from the tour dates following his public statements in support of Palestine. In his Instagram statement, Macklemore also directly challenged New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whom he has accused of orchestrating his removal from the tour, to match his donation.

Shortly after Macklemore's announcement, Kraft stated his intention to match a $2 million donation from Sheeran to address the humanitarian crisis in the region. However, Kraft's statement was more general regarding the specific recipients of the funds.

Macklemore's donation is designated for six organizations: Anera, Gaza Soup Kitchen, HEAL Palestine, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), and UNRWA USA. He emphasized that the focus should remain on the Palestinian people facing ongoing conflict and occupation.

"With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom," Macklemore stated. He also highlighted the urgency of the situation by mentioning the recent deaths of Palestinian teenagers.

The rapper acknowledged that financial donations are a limited form of solidarity but stressed the need for political change to address the crisis. He urged his followers to remain engaged with the issue even after the news cycle moves on.

The controversy began when Macklemore delivered a speech supporting Palestine and displayed footage of Gaza during his performances at MetLife Stadium in early September. This led to backlash, including a boycott petition, and ultimately his removal from the remaining tour dates. Macklemore claimed that Sheeran informed him that Robert Kraft had rallied stadium owners and issued an ultimatum, threatening to pull shows if Macklemore remained on the tour.

Sheeran confirmed that venues communicated they would not allow the tour to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup, citing concerns that his message was hurtful to many and that his performances had become a political forum unwelcome by audiences. Sheeran stated that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter, not by him personally. He also explained his personal stance of not using his platform for political statements, as his audience includes many young people. He expressed respect for Macklemore's activism but noted his own preference for maintaining a space of unity and dialogue.

Following Macklemore's removal, all of Sheeran's remaining opening acts—Finneas, Myles Smith, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, and Beoga—withdrew from the tour in solidarity. Myles Smith, a friend of Sheeran's, confirmed his departure but clarified that Sheeran was not the perpetrator, emphasizing his loyalty to his friend while still supporting Palestinian lives.

Kraft, in his statement, defended the decision to block Macklemore, citing a commitment to a welcoming environment and concerns about "antisemitic rhetoric and imagery." Macklemore, however, countered that criticism of Israel or opposition to Zionism should not be conflated with antisemitism and that using such accusations as a shield prevents accountability.

Macklemore's activism has drawn attention in the past. In 2014, he apologized after wearing a disguise that was perceived by some as an anti-Semitic Jewish caricature. He stated at the time that he never intended to offend and respects all cultures.

The situation leaves Sheeran's tour without opening acts for its remaining dates, with uncertainty about how it will proceed.
