Macklemore Defends 'Free Palestine' Remarks on New Tour Amid Criticism

Rapper Macklemore has launched his "Free Palestine" tour, reaffirming his pro-Palestinian stance during the event's kickoff in Dublin. The tour launch comes weeks after his public declarations for "Free Palestine" led to his removal as an opening act for Ed Sheeran's stadium tour.

"I am proud to stand here on stage in solidarity with the Palestinian people. We will continue to fight for collective liberation until our last breath," Macklemore told the crowd, referencing the controversy. "Six weeks ago, two words is all that it took... Somehow those words have become more controversial than the suffering that made them necessary."

Macklemore's return to the stage with his political message has elicited varied responses online. While some supporters commended his commitment to activism, others criticized his remarks, with some social media users calling him "out of touch" and accusing him of misplaced priorities.

One user on X wrote, "Imagine going to this and getting lectured by a person who is literally out of touch." Another commented, "Macklemore should care as much about Americans on Skid Row." Critics suggested the artist should address domestic issues or donate personal wealth before focusing on international political statements.

Conversely, some users praised Macklemore's courage, with one stating, "Thank goodness for the humanity and courage of artists like this. Free Palestine."

Macklemore, whose legal name is Ben Haggerty, was removed from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour after opening remarks at MetLife Stadium in early September. Sheeran later stated that the decision was made by concert promoters and venues, not directly by him. Sheeran had previously described the conflict between Israel and Palestine as a "human tragedy."

Macklemore had claimed that Sheeran informed him that Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, had influenced other stadium owners to oppose his performances. This led to Macklemore's departure from Sheeran's U.S. tour.

The "Free Palestine" tour is scheduled to continue in Paris and London, with U.S. dates and locations anticipated to be announced later. The tour merchandise, including hats, was seen for sale outside the Dublin concert venue.
