Bob MacIntyre began his Open Championship campaign at Royal Birkdale with a display of discipline and patience, overcoming an unusual early distraction to secure a promising opening round. The Scottish golfer acknowledged before the tournament that the event would test his mental fortitude, a prophecy that proved true even before his first shot.

As MacIntyre prepared to tee off at 7:19 a.m. on the first hole, a drone flew directly into his line of sight. Despite the disruption, which could have easily frustrated him, MacIntyre remained calm. He waited for the drone to move before addressing his ball.

"I knew from the practice days this was going to be a real test of my patience, real test of my mind, and I thought I did a great job," MacIntyre reflected. He then proceeded to hole a 45-foot putt for birdie on the first hole, followed by a two-foot approach shot for a second consecutive birdie on the second hole. This marked a strong start to his round.

MacIntyre's only blemish of the day came at the 8th hole, where he dropped a shot after missing the green and failing to get up and down. However, he recovered with a solid performance on the back nine, picking up two more birdies on the 12th and 14th holes, both aided by long putts. He finished his round with a par on the 18th, successfully executing a challenging wedge shot from near the grandstand.

His opening round of 67, three under par, was described by MacIntyre as "almost the perfect round of golf." The strategy involved a cautious approach off the tee, often opting for long irons or rescue clubs rather than the driver to avoid the course's pot bunkers. This approach, while sometimes leaving him further off the tee than playing partners Rickie Fowler and Alex Fitzpatrick, proved effective, as he finished the round with a lower score than both.

Despite the soaring temperatures, which neared 30 degrees Celsius, MacIntyre found ways to relax off the course, planning to spend time in a hot tub with his son. He emphasized the importance of sticking to his game plan and playing good golf.

"I said to you guys at the start of the week, I know my good golf is good enough to get in about it," he stated. "That’s the plan. Just go home now and chill out, probably go in the hot tub with the wee man."

MacIntyre expressed that winning an Open Championship would fulfill all his golfing dreams, though he acknowledged there is a long way to go in the tournament. His composed performance suggests he is well-attuned to the demands of Royal Birkdale and is positioned to contend for the Claret Jug.
