Marks & Spencer has introduced a new line of shapewear for men, the Autograph Body Invisibles range, designed to offer a smoother silhouette and increase confidence. This move comes as the market for men's shapewear, which saw a significant rise during the pandemic, continues to evolve.
The M&S collection features garments with heat-bonded seams and hems, aiming for an undetectable look under clothing. The lightweight Flexifit fabric provides stretch for ease of movement, while the Infin8 elasticated waistband and Cool Comfort technology are intended to ensure comfort and moisture-wicking.
A Shifting Market
Men's shapewear gained traction in recent years, with brands like Spanx becoming popular. In 2023, the global shapewear market was reportedly valued at approximately £4.8 billion, with Spanx founder Sara Blakely becoming a billionaire. Celebrities such as James Corden, Richard Branson, and Steve Carell were noted as wearers of the brand.
However, Spanx quietly discontinued its men's shapewear line last year, a decision the author of the Daily Mail piece described as potentially reflecting a lack of market demand. This created an opening for other brands to enter the space.
M&S Offering
The new M&S range is presented as a more accessible option. A three-pack of M&S Body Invisibles trunks costs £28, significantly less than a pair of Spanx For Men Sculpt Cotton Spandex Briefs, which were priced around £56 and are now primarily available through third-party sellers like Amazon.
According to product testers, the M&S shapewear offers a noticeable slimming effect, with claims that the pants can reduce waist size and flatten the abdomen and chest area. The material, a blend of polyamide and elastane, is described as feeling less clammy and more comfortable than some alternatives, even with a very close fit.
The range aims to provide a 'smooth feel and undetectable look,' allowing men to feel more confident in their attire. The M&S offering includes trunks and vests designed with advanced comfort features, positioning them as 'premium investment pieces' for personal confidence and appearance.
