Luxury Watch Collection Seized from Fraudster to Be Auctioned

A collection of five luxury watches, valued at potentially over £3 million, is set to be auctioned after being seized by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) from a fraud suspect attempting to flee the United Kingdom. Wilsons Auctions will handle the sale, which is scheduled for a 24-hour online auction later this month.

The suspect had reportedly spent more than £7 million on luxury watches over a three-year period while allegedly orchestrating a multi-million-pound payroll fraud. The scheme involved pocketing funds from employee payslips through a bogus third-party payroll firm.

Wilsons Auctions, a firm frequently used by UK police to sell recovered stolen goods, anticipates significant interest in the timepieces. James Guiler, a luxury goods specialist at the auction house, described the collection as "one of the most exciting groups of watches we have had the privilege of offering." He highlighted the exceptional rarity of a Philippe Dufour Simplicity, noting that it is often a piece collectors wait years to acquire. This particular watch is expected to fetch at least £1 million.

The sale will also include a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Split Seconds Chronograph, valued at up to £450,000. This timepiece is noted for its complexity, featuring a calendar capable of tracking leap years and varying month lengths for centuries, along with a dual-event stopwatch.

Two Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks and an Omega Speedmaster Racing, collectively valued at nearly £300,000, will also go under the hammer. The auction is described as "unreserved," meaning each item will be sold to the highest bidder on the day of the auction.

Philippe Dufour's watches are rare due to his meticulous hand-making process, producing only about 18 timepieces per year. The Simplicity model being auctioned is one of approximately 200 in existence and will be presented in its original box, with its signature and serial number engraved on solid gold plates.

In a separate but related development, Wilsons Auctions may also auction off a motorhome previously owned by former SNP chief Peter Murrell. Murrell was jailed in June for embezzling over £400,000 from the party. The motorhome, purchased with SNP funds at a cost of £124,550, was seized as part of an investigation into financial misconduct. The Crown Office has stated its intention to recover some of the value of Murrell's fraudulently obtained assets through proceeds of crime legislation, with the SNP as the victim of the crime potentially receiving compensation.
