The humble hot dog has undergone a significant transformation, with upscale establishments now offering versions adorned with caviar, Wagyu beef, and 24-karat gold flakes, commanding prices as high as $100. This trend sees the popular street food elevated with luxury ingredients, moving far beyond traditional ketchup and mustard.
The "Golden Glizzy," a creation by Miami-based Golden Goat, features an Australian Wagyu hot dog topped with crème fraîche, mascarpone, 30 grams of Golden Goat Classic Ossetra caviar, chives, and edible gold flakes. Served on a croissant dough bun, this premium hot dog is priced at $100.
This extravagant offering proved popular at recent high-profile events, including the Formula One Miami Grand Prix and the Miami Open tennis tournament, where it sold out. Keith Glickman, managing partner of Golden Goat Caviar, noted the significant interest, stating that the price is comparable to the cost of the caviar alone.
Another high-end interpretation is found at The Bar Room at The Modern, located within New York City's Museum of Modern Art. Here, two mini Wagyu hot dogs are served on poppy seed buns with pickled shallots, a sauce made with fried egg, house-made mustard, and sour beer, all crowned with caviar. This dish is priced at $39. The inspiration for The Modern's offering came after Danny Meyer, founder and executive chairman of Union Square Hospitality Group, experienced caviar on a hot dog and recognized the unique combination's potential. The dish has since become a signature item, noted for its surprising yet delicious appeal.
At the Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado, the Ski Hill Grill offers a "Mega Hot Dog Tower" for $60. This includes six all-beef hot dogs accompanied by a selection of six sauces and a large portion of waffle fries. A spokesperson for the resort described the dish as an eye-catching and "absurd" creation intended to be shared, mirroring the playful spirit of the mountain community and serving as a more communal alternative to seafood towers.
