Luke Grimes Says He Hasn't Spoken to Kevin Costner Since 'Yellowstone' Exit

Luke Grimes, star of the upcoming series "Marshals," stated that he has had no contact with Kevin Costner since Costner's departure from "Yellowstone." Grimes expressed skepticism regarding any possibility of Costner appearing in the "Yellowstone" spinoff.

In an interview with USA Today, Grimes explained that their relationship has not continued since Costner exited the Taylor Sheridan series in 2024. When asked about the likelihood of Costner appearing on "Marshals," Grimes stated, "I haven't talked to Kevin since we stopped working together. Not for any reason other than we're busy guys and life moves on."

Grimes acknowledged that a cameo from Costner on "Marshals" would be "cool," but he "doubts" it would ever occur. He further suggested that if a flashback involving his character's father were to be included, he would prefer it to be with Monica (Kelsey Asbille) rather than John Dutton (Costner), believing it would be "more poignant to the character."

Costner, who portrayed the patriarch John Dutton, left "Yellowstone" during its fifth season. His exit reportedly stemmed from a scheduling dispute related to production delays and his commitment to his film series "Horizon: An American Saga." Costner has stated he prioritized "Yellowstone" and contested claims that he left solely to focus on his films, citing delays and a lack of scripts for the latter half of season 5.

Taylor Sheridan, the creator of "Yellowstone," previously commented on Costner's tenure, suggesting on "The Bill Simmons Podcast" that Costner had initially agreed to a three-season commitment for "Yellowstone." Sheridan indicated that Costner remained with the show longer as it became a significant hit.

Grimes and Costner worked together for four seasons on "Yellowstone," with Grimes playing Kayce Dutton, John Dutton's youngest son. The series follows the Dutton family's struggles to maintain ownership of the Yellowstone Ranch amidst external pressures.

Grimes's character, Kayce Dutton, is featured in the new series "Marshals," which follows him after leaving the ranch to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana.
