Football icon Luis Figo has strongly criticized FIFA President Gianni Infantino, labeling his behavior as "the lowest, most deceitful and cravenly self-interested" he has ever witnessed. Figo, a former professional player with 20 years of experience, stated that Infantino "must go NOW" due to alleged attempts to push through major changes for personal and his friends' enrichment.
In an opinion piece, Figo questioned the transparency of a proposal reportedly involving the sale of World Cup shares to private investors. He pointed out that the plan was not clearly communicated to FIFA members when they were gathered, and the risks associated with private equity were not fully disclosed. Figo also alleged that Infantino failed to mention the personal financial benefit he stood to gain, including a potential $30 million annual salary from the deal.
Figo referenced previous actions attributed to Infantino, such as suspending disciplinary decisions and altering the laws of the game for entertainment purposes, suggesting a pattern of prioritizing personal connections over the sport's integrity. He also cited comments from Prince Ali of Jordan, who reportedly highlighted "mob-like behaviour" from Infantino's administration in obstructing work and funding for electoral processes.
The football legend argued that while discussions about football finances are necessary, they should focus on developing the sport and ensuring opportunities for young players, rather than on external investors or inflated administrator salaries. He pointed to FIFA's reserves of $5 billion, suggesting that this capital could negate the need for outside investment.
Figo drew parallels between the alleged World Cup investment plan and the Super League controversy, noting that both were exposed by the media before their proponents could solidify their messaging. He concluded that Infantino has "debased the office of FIFA President" through alleged lies and self-serving actions, and that it is time for him to step down to save the future of football.
