As the holiday season approaches, Lowe's has reintroduced its popular 5-foot-tall Elf on the Shelf, a move that has already generated significant customer interest. The oversized, poseable elves are available for $149 and come in four variations, with different outfits and accessories.

The return of the life-sized elf taps into the ongoing tradition of the Elf on the Shelf, a character from a children's book series. Since its introduction in 2005, the Elf on the Shelf has become a December fixture, with families placing the scout elf in various humorous or mischievous positions around their homes each day. The tradition involves the elf returning to the North Pole each night to report to Santa Claus on the children's behavior.

Lowe's customers have historically shown high demand for the 5-foot elf. Last year, the item sold out quickly due to limited stock, prompting some shoppers to seek it on secondary markets. One customer, identified as Cindy in a review on Lowe's website, expressed her determination to acquire the elf this year after missing out previously, noting its immediate placement in her shopping cart upon seeing it on display.

Reports indicate that over 500 of the large elves have been purchased online through Lowe's within the current week. The high demand is also reflected on resale platforms, where listings for the elf have appeared at significantly higher prices, with one eBay listing reaching $280.

The Elf on the Shelf franchise was created by twin sisters Christa Pitts and Chanda A. Bell, who have since expanded the brand into a larger "Santaverse" encompassing books, videos, and other merchandise. The original concept involves parents purchasing a scout elf to help monitor children's adherence to the 'Nice List,' with families often giving their elf a unique name.
