Lovie Smith Involved in Sideline Altercation With Parents at Arizona High School Football Game
The former NFL coach was seen on video confronting parents following a controversy that led to the suspension of 12 players.

Former NFL head coach Lovie Smith was involved in a heated exchange with parents at a high school football game in Arizona on Friday. The incident occurred after a dispute that led to the suspension of 12 players from the Mesa Desert Ridge High School team, where Smith's son, Miles, is the head coach and Lovie recently joined the staff.
The confrontation was captured on video and reportedly stemmed from parents attempting to help set up equipment for the game. According to reports, Lovie Smith was seen berating parents after equipment was thrown on the locker room floor. This occurred in the wake of a team controversy that began when Miles Smith dismissed starting quarterback Gunner Brewer for "disrespect."
Following Brewer's dismissal, several teammates reportedly questioned the decision. Miles Smith stated it was "his team" and that any players who disagreed could leave. Consequently, 12 players, including five seniors, were suspended after walking out of a meeting with coaches. Despite their suspension, these players arrived on Friday to assist with pre-game setup, but were told by the coaching staff they were not permitted to help, leading to the public altercation.
Reports indicate Brewer's mother stated her son was removed from the team after calling a different play than instructed during a game on Oct. 2. Afterward, Miles Smith requested a meeting with Brewer.
During the subsequent team meeting, offensive lineman Will Stark reportedly asked which players wanted Brewer back on the team, with several players raising their hands. Following this, their equipment and banners were removed from the locker room. Athletic director Kevin Swann confirmed to the Republic that the suspended players could return for winter workouts and the following season.
Lovie Smith has previously served as head coach in the NFL for the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Houston Texans.
